The National Marine Science Strategy 2026–36 is a roadmap for the future of our ocean. It was developed by more than 500 people from over 120 institutions across Australia’s marine science, policy, and industry communities.
Scientell distilled information from 21 technical papers written by these diverse contributors into a concise, easy-to-read strategy that guides investment in research, infrastructure, and capability development over the coming decade.
We helped articulate priority recommendations that focus national effort, and overarching ambitions that detail the goals, opportunities, risks and science priorities in important marine sectors. We also wrote a concise, 2-page summary highlighting key information from the strategy.
The strategy aims to support the understanding, sustainable use and protection of our oceans, while delivering cultural, environmental, and economic benefits for Australia and the region over the next decade.
The strategy includes summary infographics, marine science definitions, engaging imagery, and fascinating facts about Australia’s marine territory.
The strategy was launched at Parliament House in Canberra by Senator The Hon Murray Watt and Australia’s Chief Scientist Tony Haymet in March 2026.
