Scientell delivered two half-day science communication training workshops for PhD students from the University of South Australia (UniSA). The workshop provided practical tools to help students communicate their research clearly and confidently, whether for conferences, grants, public engagement, or the next elevator conversation
Client: Clinical and Health Sciences (CHS) unit, University of South Australia
Audience: PhD students, early career researchers

Communicating complex science to non-specialist audiences is a critical skill for researchers. This highly interactive workshop helped UniSA’s HDR students build strong communication foundations, starting with the goals of communication, understanding their audience, identifying key messages, and choosing the right formats. Drawing on experience in both research and science communication, Scientell staff covered practical strategies for translating complex topics into clear, engaging narratives. Participants explored storytelling techniques, learned to structure effective presentations (including hooks, calls to action and analogies), and discovered best practices for visual communication, complete with tips for using props and demonstrations to enhance clarity and impact.
Students also developed practical delivery skills, including how to use body language, voice and pacing, manage nerves, and confidently respond to audience questions. The session concluded with each participant delivering a 1-minute elevator pitch about their research, followed by constructive feedback in a supportive group environment.
