Job application and interview training for St Vincent’s Institute for Medical Research

Scientell developed and delivered two half-day job interview skills training courses for early career researchers at St Vincent’s Institute for Medical Research (SVI). The session was designed to support Honours, Masters and PhD students as they transition into the workforce, with a focus on career planning, job applications and interview preparation.

Client: St Vincent’s Institute for Medical Research

Audience: Honours, Masters and PhD students, and early career researchers

The workshop helped participants build confidence and capability in preparing for and succeeding in job applications and interviews. The session blended communication theory with practical exercises, including developing mind maps, undertaking mock interviews and  receiving personalised feedback, to help participants articulate their strengths and experience and present themselves effectively to prospective employers.

Facilitated by two Scientell presenters, the course offered diverse insights into the job application process. As part of SVI’s ‘Speaking Science’ workshop series, the session covered: identifying suitable careers, developing CVs, writing effective applications and cover letters, networking tips, and preparing for interviews. The interactive format enabled participants to explore employer expectations, practise responses using the STAR format (situation, task, action, response), and gain valuable peer and facilitator feedback.

The workshop was delivered face-to-face at SVI and structured to accommodate up to 30 participants across two sessions. It served as a pilot for a potential series of future workshops in 2025.
