Communication and facilitation support for CSIRO as part of stage 1 of the Australian Government’s National Climate Risk Assessment

Scientell helped CSIRO organise and facilitate multiple online and in-person workshops with climate risk experts as part of the National Climate Risk Assessment. We developed multiple reports to capture the key findings from the workshops, including developing national priority climate risks for Australia as part of stage 1.

Client: CSIRO

Audience: The Australian Climate Service, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, and Australian climate risk managers

Description

Stage 1 of the Australian Government’s National Climate Risk Assessment began in July 2023. It aimed to deliver a qualitative, high-level understanding of national priorities for climate adaptation action and a set of priority climate risks for consideration in a detailed analysis in stage 2 of the National Assessment in 2024. The CSIRO, as an Australian Climate Service partner, lead the technical delivery of stage 1.

As part of a broad project team, Scientell helped CSIRO organise and facilitate 7 full-day online stakeholder elicitation workshops that gathered information and discussions on nationally significant climate risks from a wide range of Australian stakeholders. Scientell also helped to organise and facilitate a 2-day in-person synthesis workshop that brought together the information and draft risks resulting from the online workshops.

As part of this process, Scientell led the development of 8 workshop reports and was involved in the post-workshop analysis that led to the recommendation of 12 national priority climate risks under stage 1.
